The limited max bill annual edition 2018 from Junghans is a work of art in two respects: one unique feature is the back, which bears the sicherheit ( security) motif by Max Bill, whilst the dial delights with purist Max Bill typography.
The art work sicherheit comes from the famous grafische reihen (graphic series) by Max Bill – in this case from series no. 5. In his grafische reihen series the Bauhaus scholar and artist Max Bill took a personal interest in illustrating to art lovers the process of creating works of art, together with their inner and outer structures. Because although it is possible to love a work of art without understanding it, true enjoyment is only possible if you know the methods used in its creation. The sicherheit is therefore also based on the transformation of an underlying idea. Four yellow, red, blue and green triangles formed into a square are twisted and shifted to create the complex work of art, which in 2018 decorates the back of the max bill quartz watch.
Following on from the coveted annual edition 2017, an absolute highlight for collectors, Junghans is continuing the tradition with the max bill annual edition 2018. The purist dial with its fine hands, balanced proportions and characteristic numerals was designed for Junghans by Max Bill in 1961. One new and discreet reference to the limited special edition is the green date, the green stitching of the calfskin strap and the green underlayer – with the colour corresponding to the green tone found, along with the three other colours, in the motif on the back of the watch. Along with the motifs gegenseitigkeit (mutuality), aktion (action), ruhe (tranquillity) and gleichgewicht ( balance ) , the sicherheit comes from the 5th series fünf quantengleiche quadrate (five squares with the same quantum). These were created in 1972 as part of a work commissioned by a Swiss insurer. Max Bill succeeded in achieving a perfect depiction of these values, which still have an emotional effect on people to this day.
