SINGAPORE, 24 September 2018 – In the post-war years of the late 1940s and 1950s, aerodynamic principles were just beginning to take root in the field of automotive design. The boxy, carriage-like shapes of previous decades were melting into something more streamlined. At the same time, curvilinear forms became more prominent, carrying the immediate promise of power and speed. The sophisticated computer modelling and wind-tunnel technology we have today were far-off dreams at that time – designers were guided more by their aesthetic sense than by any scientific precepts.

The result was some of the most beautiful man-made objects ever created, epitomised by automobiles like the Mercedes-Benz W196 and 1948 Buick Streamliner. Other industries followed, notably that of aviation, producing aircraft such as the sleek-bodied, snub-nosed De Havilland Venom that patrolled Swiss airspace for 30 years.

Swatch Group, in collaboration with Audemars Piguet, has developed a new nonmagnetic compensating alloy called Nivachron™ for this revolutionary balance spring. With its complex composition, the alloy was developed with the aim of optimizing the resistance of watch movements to magnetic fields.

The Nivachron™ balance spring offers a number of advantages. It allows a considerable reduction in the influence of the residual effect of a magnetic field on the running of a watch (a reduction by a factor of 10 to 20, depending on the caliber). The Swiss-made balance spring, made of a titanium base, is very effective against temperature variations experienced in wearing conditions. In addition, it offers excellent shock resistance. Ultimately, all of these advantages result in a significant improvement in chronometric performance.

Magnetic fields, which are pervasive in our environment, severely disrupt mechanical watch movements. They affect a watch’s operation and its performance and can even, in some cases, stop it completely.

Of all the watch components required to make a timepiece, the balance spring is one of the most critical. Its production requires a high level of know-how and expertise. Now over 170 years old, the Glashütte art of watchmaking welcomes new talents with open arms: summer temperatures on Thursday, 12 July 2018, accompanied 22 watch experts as they celebrated the completion of their studies at Glashütte Original's "Alfred Helwig" School of watchmaking. Management and teachers at the school awarded them diplomas and congratulated the graduating class, the majority of whom were young women. The up and coming experts didn't rest on their laurels for long: most of them began work the next day at Glashütte Original.

In 1868, with a vision to engineer the best pocket watch movements of his time, an ambitious, young Boston watchmaker named Florentine Ariosto Jones (F.A. Jones) sailed across the Atlantic from America to Switzerland to set up the International Watch Company on the bank of the magnificent Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen. By combining the unrivaled expertise of home-based Swiss craftsmen with state-of-the-art machine technology from America, the 27-year-old quickly established a strong
industrialised manufacturing infrastructure that was geared, impressively, for the production of more than 10,000 firstclass mechanical movements per year.

As IWC Schaffhausen turns 150 this year, the company invites its clients, watch enthusiasts and members of the public to trace the adventurous footsteps of F.A Jones and immerse themselves in his untiring quest for engineering excellence at the IWC 150th Anniversary Exhibition, which will run from 1st May 2018 to 13th May 2018 in Singapore at the first-level atrium of multi-award-winning, upscale shopping mall ION Orchard.

Taking centre stage at the retrospective exhibition, which is designed in the industrial style of IWC’s factory in its early days, are 10 of the most iconic watches the luxury brand has ever designed and manufactured.

Travelling from IWC’s storied archives in Schaffhausen, those include the iconic Special Watch for Pilots Ref. 436 (1936); the Yacht Club Automatic Ref. 811 (1967), which was one of IWC’s first watches to be adorned with a blue dial; and the Lepine Pallweber III pocket watch (1886) that featured breakthrough jumping numerals.

On display are also the showstoppers from IWC’s Jubilee collection, which was unveiled at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva in January to celebrate its 150th birthday. Those include the highly talked about Tribute to Pallweber pocket- and wristwatches; the diamond encrusted Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36 Edition “150 Years”; and the Portugieser Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition “150 Years”.

“For 150 years, IWC has remained true to the legacy of its founder F.A. Jones and made many lasting impressions from both an artistic and a technical perspective in the world of fine watchmaking,” says Managing Director for IWC South East Asia Mr. Stanislas Rambaud. “Looking back, for us, is just as important as looking forward.
