Two weeks ago, Omega held an exhibition to launch the Planet Ocean “Deep Black” collection at ION Orchard. The exhibition was held at ION Art, an exhibition space in the shopping mall. Omega invited members of the media, customers and collectors to this special exhibition held over two days. I was present at the luncheon and would like to share with you the highlights.
Jose De Cardoso (President, Swatch Group Southeast Asia) talking to journalists from top publications in Singapore.
Gregory Kissling (Head of R&D, Omega) was present to help us understand the manufacturing process of the watch case and bezel.
Checking the magnetization of the watch
Various stages of the finishing process of the Grade 5 Ti case.
Note the size of the Ceramic blank before going through the high-pressure compression process.
The cases are then milled and polished by diamond tools and go through a 3-hour plasma treatment in a furnace at up to 2000 deg. C!
Pic showing the infused rubber on the bezel. A depth of 0.2 mm was made on the 15-min markers using 5-axis laser engraving on a dovetail profile. Rubber is then infused into that cavity. With this technique, the rubber will permanently adhere to the bezel. Having worked in engineering before, I was naturally curious to know how the process worked when I first saw the 2016 collection here. I have a different idea on how I thought it was supposed to be done but I was glad I got the answer from Gregory!
A beautifully made case.
