Press Release: The Horological Society of New York (HSNY) To Hold Courses At The Hour Glass In Singapore

The Horological Society of New York (HSNY), America’s oldest watchmaking guild (founded in 1866) announces today its Traveling Education courses in Singapore this fall. Hosted in the heart of Orchard Road at Malmaison, The Hour Glass’ flagship thematic salon; this marks the non-profit’s debut trip to Asia in the name of furthering horological education. One of the world’s leading specialist watch retailers, this series of courses was made possible by The Hour Glass as part of their ongoing commitment to advance watch culture throughout the world.

On Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9, Vincent Robert, HSNY’s Director of Traveling Education, will visit Singapore and host a two-day educational program with the assistance of a certified watchmaker from The Hour Glass.

For the first time in its 152-year history, the HSNY will visit one of the world’s largest and most engaged hubs for watch culture and home to a diverse and passionate community of watch collectors and enthusiasts. In supporting HSNY’s mission to advance the art and science of horology through education, The Hour Glass offers a unique hands-on experience to gain a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of a timepiece. HSNY will guide students on a journey to dive in deep and better understand the craft of watchmaking. At Malmaison, eight watch enthusiasts will have the unique opportunity to assume the role of watchmaker and to discover what makes a timepiece tick. Students will be guided through an intimate, hands-on experience examining the inner workings of an ETA 6497 movement, the first of many movements worked on whilst pupils attend watchmaking school.

HSNY looks to go beyond scratching the surface of horological education, with a four-hour course covering material from Horology 101 – 103 classes taught at HSNY’s flagship classroom in New York City. Throughout the day, students will disassemble and reassemble a complete mechanical watch movement, learn the proper usage of watchmaking tools, and gain insight to the terminology and theories of modern horology. Students will take a deep dive with exercises on movement mechanics, gear training, and winding and setting. Alongside Vincent Robert will be one of The Hour Glass’s top resident watchmakers, ensuring each student receives tailored guidance and the unique opportunity to work closely with experts in the field.

Courses will be offered on Saturday, September 8 (9am -1pm) & (2:30pm -6:30pm) and Sunday, September 9 (9am- 1pm) & (2:30pm -6:30pm) Admission is $500 USD and includes access to watchmaking tools and a mechanical watch movement for the duration of the class. No previous experience is required. Profit generated from ticket sales goes towards HSNY’s mission of advancing the art and science of horology through education.
